BREAKING: Candidate Cowed by Wingnuts Continues to Be Cowed by Wingnuts
As everyone knows by now, Mitt's attempt to pivot to the center by hiring a misogynist neo-con* who happens to be gay didn't work out so well. Instead of looking tolerant, the Romney campaign just comes off as haplessly incompetent. There are various versions of Grenell's departure out there (including a heavily spun version from the campaign), but this New York Times article sums it all up in a single paragraph:
“It’s not that the campaign cared whether Ric Grenell was gay,” one Republican adviser said. “They believed this was a nonissue. But they didn’t want to confront the religious right.” Like many interviewed, this adviser insisted on anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. [emphasis added]That's it right there. The lunatic fundamentalists objected, and Romney caved.
As Steve has been pointing out all along, president Romney would be a captive to the teabagger and religious bigot factions; as Steve puts it, He'll slavishly follow whoever sets the tone in his party.
Which is why anyone who thinks he could govern as a 'moderate' is severely delusional (I'm talkin' to you, Peanut Boy). Anyone who has been paying attention should know this by now. If they didn't, the Grenell saga should make it painfully clear.
