The Huffington Post picked up on it yesterday, as did a lot of bloggers, and Drudge still has a link up, but it doesn't seem right that this is only now becoming news:

... Kim Lehman, who is one of Iowa's two national Republican Committee members, may be one of the first national committee members to publicly state she believes Obama is a Muslim.

In a speech in Egypt in June 2009, Obama said he is a Christian. But Lehman said the speech “just had the appearance that he was aligning himself with the Muslims."

... Lehman began to attract attention when she posted a Twitter message last week in response to a Politico news article about a Pew poll that shows 31 percent of Republicans and 10 percent of Democrats believe Obama is a Muslim. The Politico article pointed out that Obama -- whose father was raised as a Muslim -- has repeatedly found his faith questioned, and has "confronted the rumors head-on."

"@politico you're funny. They must pay you a lot to protect Obama. BTW he personally told the muslims that he IS a muslim. Read his lips," Lehman said on her Twitter page on Thursday....

Yup, that's what the tweet from Thursday said. But Lehman didn't just go public with conspiratorial lunacy last week. She's been posting tweets like that for quite some time.

A tweet from July 26 shows she's a birther:

What the hell? Obama admists he is from Kenya and nothing happens--creepy www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwhKuunp8D8&feature=player_embedded

On July 13 she retweeted this:

worldnetdaily BREAKING: Senator: Resolve eligibility in court http://bit.ly/bnNq8v #wnd #eligibility #birthcertificate #obama

Also on July 13, there was this (I'm not sure what it was in response to):

@worldnetdaily isn't this really about the simple oath of office to "uphold" the Constitution. This is an illegal act.

And on June 30 she retweeted this:

worldnetdaily Appeals panel considers whether Obama is even American http://bit.ly/9Uh3Dc #wnd#obama #eligibilty #birther #birthcertificate

Oh, and there was this on June 13:

Obama says "I am a Muslim" to the Egyptian Foreign Minister www.Centrepointnews.com

The latter cites this -- which was coauthored by Pam Geller:

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit said he had a one-on-one meeting with Obama, in which President Obama told him that he was still a Muslim, the son of a Muslim father, the stepson of Muslim stepfather, that his half brothers in Kenya are Muslims, and that he was sympathetic towards the Muslim agenda.

Finally, during the week of 14-18th of January 2010, just on the eve of my winter tour to the US, Rachel picked up a Nile TV broadcast in which Egyptian Foreign Minister Abul Gheit said on the “Round Table Show” that he had had a one on one meeting with Obama who swore to him that he was a Moslem, the son of a Moslem father and step-son of Moslem step-father, that his half-brothers in Kenya were Moslems, and that he was loyal to the Moslem agenda. He asked that the Moslem world show patience. Obama promised that once he overcame some domestic American problems (Healthcare), that he would show the Moslem world what he would do with Israel. (more here)...

(Emphasis in original.)

That's as far back as I went. I don't think I need to go further.

Lehman is in a rarefied group -- one of three voting members of the RNC from each U.S. state and territory.

In theory, I suppose someone should ask Michael Steele why a birther, Muslim-truther, and Pam Geller-quoter should hold such a position -- and should have asked him that months ago.

On the other hand, isn't this more or less par for the course for Republicans these days?
