EVEN MORE OF A JERK THAN YOU THOUGHT HE WAS
Over at Shakesville, Melissa told you about Bush's quip after he got the year of Queen Elizabeth's Bicentennial visit wrong.
Bush joked that the queen just "gave me a look that only a mother could give a child."
She also provided the C-SPAN video.
But if ABC's story is right (and the ABC video seems to bear this out -- go to "White House Gets a Royal Visit" on the video menu), Bush didn't just flub a date and then cover it up with a weak joke. He actually winked at the queen after the slip-up. Winked!
Bush thought getting the date wrong was incredibly charming. And he thought his wink was very amusing.
What Tom posted over the weekend is right:
The fact that he's a product of the aristocracy rather than a country bumpkin just makes his boorishness that much worse. Worse because he's a boor despite having had all the advantages, and worse still because his boorishness is accompanied (is fed) by a sense of entitlement.
You really see the sense of entitlement when you watch the wink. He thinks everybody is required to like him, even when (or especially when) he messes up.
