A New Mexico county commissioner who took part in the January 6 Capitol riot has been arrested after he vowed to return to the Capitol for Joe Biden's inaugural carrying guns.
Couy Griffin, the founder of the "Cowboys for Trump" organization, has been arrested by the FBI after he vowed to return to the United States Capitol building carrying guns.

CBS News reports that Griffin was charged with illegally trespassing in the Capitol building during the infamous January 6th pro-Trump riots that resulted in the deaths of five people.

Griffin, who also serves as a Republican commissioner for Otero County, New Mexico, vowed last week that he would attend President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration while packing heat.

"I'm gonna be there on January 20th... and I'm gonna take a stand for our country and for our freedoms," Griffin said during an Otero County Board of Commissioners meeting. "I'm gonna leave either tonight or tomorrow. I've got a .357 Henry Big Boy rifle lever action that I've got in the trunk of my car and I've got a .357 single action revolver, the Colt Ruger Vaquero that I'll have underneath the front seat on my right side and I will embrace my Second Amendment."
Prior to this, Griffin was notorious in New Mexico for racist remarks:

GRIFFIN: ... They want to talk about playing a Black national anthem before football games? I got a better idea. Why don't you go back to Africa and form your own football teams over in Africa and you can play on an old beat-out dirt lot, and you can play your Black national anthem there. How about that?
GRIFFIN: If you want to think that Whites are gonna be your slaves, and that all Whites are evil and the Whites are bad, then move, move -- and if you want to call yourself an African, then move back to Africa if that's what pleases you. That's not a racist thing to say if you're not happy here and you call yourself an African, or an Ecuadorian, or a Mexican, or a Chinaman, a Chinese, or whatever....
Griffin was banned from Mescalero Apache land last year in response to a couple of his videos, in one of which he seemed to be rooting for Nancy Pelosi's death.
The Mescalero Apache Tribe announced via its Facebook page that District 2 Otero County Commissioner Couy Griffin has been banned from the Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation.

The tribe said its decision was made after reviewing two videos filmed on tribal land and disseminated by Griffin via the Cowboys for Trump Facebook page....

[The] second video posted online Sept. 20 shows Griffin receiving a Mescalero blessing ceremony. [Tribal president Gabe] Aguilar criticized Griffin’s behavior in the video, saying such ceremonies are not meant to be “comical.”

... In the video, Griffin is shown laughing. Off screen, a second person comments that Griffin should “go after some dead Democrats ... they can’t do nothing to you now.” Griffin answered, “That’s right ... bring it on, Nancy Pelosi.”
The second person's comments might have been an allusion to an earlier Griffin video:
In a video posted Tuesday on social media, Otero County Commissioner Couy Griffin said he wished for the Democratic Party to die because it was anti-American and opposed to President Donald Trump.

“I’ve come to a place where I’ve come to the conclusion that the only good Democrat is a dead Democrat,” Griffin said in a video on the Cowboys for Trump Facebook and Twitter pages. The crowd at an unknown event began to cheer.

“I don’t say that in the physical sense, and I can already see where the videos getting edited where it says I want to go murder Democrats. No,” Griffin continued. “I say that in the political sense because the Democrat agenda and policy is anti-American right now.”
And that's mild compared to some of Griffin's other pronouncements:
Griffin: “I Don’t Care If You Are A Governor, You Can Still Swing At The End Of A Rope.” If there’s political leaders such as governors...y’all better start paying real close attention, because we’re moving to you. And you better make sure that you haven’t been doing anything where you would be guilty of the charge of treason, because I don’t care if you are a governor, you can still swing at the end of a rope.” 4/20/20

Griffin Continued To Call For The Death Penalty For “Treasonous” Politicians Who Are Undermining The President. “If we have political leaders in our country today... that are guilty of treason, which is to directly undermine the United States of America...such things like the Mueller Report... all this fake stuff that was constructed to try to destroy our president and in turn bring our nation down in my opinion is treason in its truest form. Treason is punishable by death.” 4/20/20

Griffin Said Democrats Are Guilty Of Treason, Which He Referred To As “A Hanging Offense.” “They’re gonna milk this coronavirus deal as long as they possibly can...Maybe they’re doing it because some of them might be guilty of treason, and treasons a hanging offense. I don’t know why they’re doing it, but they’re doing it, and we can’t let them win. We’ve gotta fight back; we’ve gotta push back.” 4/26/20

Griffin On Twitter: “There Will Come A Day When Politics Won’t Be Able To Hide Treasonous Acts. Hang Em High Mr. President!” 5/10/20

... Griffin Promoted A Possible Civil War Between Mask Wearers And Non-mask Wearers. “It might be a lead up to a civil war and if we do have a civil war over this, maybe that’s gonna be the uniforms. Maybe one of the uniforms will have masks on and the other ones won’t.” 5/3/20

Griffin Promoted on Facebook a Potential Civil War Between the NM State Police And County Sheriffs. “This “pandemic” could lead us to a civil war! We must stand behind our County Sheriffs and guard our Constitution at any cost! The State Police and his administration are appointed. Our County Sheriffs are elected. Our Founding Fathers were brilliant visionaries! They gave us a threshold to stand on. It is time to stand!” 4/30/20
Yes, of course Griffin is a COVID crackpot. This is from July:
Couy Griffin, a Republican commissioner for Otero County, New Mexico, is now encouraging his supporters to stop wearing face masks to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Griffin ... posted a video on Twitter this week in which he falsely claimed that wearing face masks weakens human immune systems.

"The longer you wear a mask, the weaker your immune system will be and the more susceptible you'll be to disease," said Griffin, who added that it's good for people to "get exposed" to viruses and bacteria so their immune systems strengthen.
Otero County is, like most of New Mexico, in what the state considers a red zone; it has a test positivity rate of 10.58%.

The New Mexico Republican Party has now disavowed Griffin.
The Republican Party of New Mexico released a statement by Party Chairman Steve Pearce distancing themselves from Republican Otero County Commissioner Couy Griffin and his organization Cowboys for Trump last week.

“Mr. Griffin does not represent the Republican Party of New Mexico nor does he speak for the party. RPNM does not endorse or condone the statements made by Cowboys for Trump Founder Couy Griffin," Republican Party of New Mexico Chairman Steve Pearce said.

"RPNM condemns violence and any threats of violence against any person or group. What happened in Washington was wrong and was a stain on our great democracy.”
That should have happened a long time ago, Steve.
