SO MUCH FOR THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE RELEASE AS A DEATH KNELL FOR TRUMP IN THE GOP

The point most people are taking away from this new Quinnipiac poll is that 58% of Americans say they'd never consider voting for Sarah Palin or Donald Trump. But I want to point out how Republicans (and Republican-leaners) feel about Trump -- even after the release of President Obama's full birth certificate. Obama released that document the morning of April 27; Quinnipiac conducted its poll April 26 through May 1. That means the majority of intervierws were conducted after the birth certificate release.

And yet a solid majority -- 61% -- of Republicans and leaners still said they'd vote for Trump "enthusiastically" or "consider" voting for him.

So birtherism didn't kill Trump's chances in the GOP. Maybe something else -- the death of bin Laden after all Trump's snippy remarks about Obama's leadership skills? the jokes at the White House Correspondents dinner? -- will do the job, but the birth certificate didn't.

That's the Republican base for you.
