Three people were killed at a mall in Greenwood, Ind., in a shooting that ended when an armed man fatally shot the gunman, city authorities said. It's no surprise that the right is focused on what that "good Samaritan" did. But some right-wingers are describing the incident as if it all worked out really well.
Two additional people were hospitalized in the shooting, which began when a man with a rifle and several magazines of ammunition entered the mall’s food court and started firing, Chief Jim Ison of the Greenwood Police Department said....
The injured were a 12-year-old girl who suffered a very minor wound on her back and another person who was in stable condition, Chief Ison said....
Chief Ison ... said the threat ended when an armed passer-by, who had a handgun, stopped the gunman. “It appears that a good Samaritan that was armed observed the shooting in progress and shot the shooter,” he said.
Here's the Breitbart headline:
Report: Armed Citizen Foils Mass Shooting, Kills Indiana Mall AttackerMy dictionary says that "foil" means "to prevent from attaining an end." This guy killed three people.
The gun periodical Ammoland is even more gleeful:
Mass Murder Stopped by Armed Citizen in Indiana Mall, Good Guns Saved the Day!Yes -- "saved the day" unless you were one of the three people who were shot and killed.
I know this is hard for the gunners to understand, but here goes: The gun culture that put a firearm in that good Samaritan's hands also put a firearm in the mass murderer's hands. If many of us aren't thrilled with what happened in that mall, it's because we don't see these mass shootings as inevitable. They're extraordinarily rare in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and Canada. There are angry people in all those countries. There are mentally ill people in all those countries. But we have nearly all the mass shootings.
You people think this is a good deal: Every few days, an angry, mentally unstable person who has acquired a gun will kill and injure some innocent people, but not a lot of innocent people, because "a good guy with a gun" will stop the shooter after, oh, only two or three murders.
To you, that's awesome. To most of us, that's madness.
