THE ANN COULTER OLDIES TOUR
Is Ann Coulter moving into that sad realm occupied by rock bands that have had all the hits they'll ever have and now spend their middle age grinding through those hits (and other people's hits) at state fairs, hoping fans still care?
I say this because Coulter has a new book out, and The New York Observer's George Gurley has interviewed her again. (He's the guy to whom she said, back in 2002, "My only regret with Timothy McVeigh is he did not go to the New York Times Building.") The new interview isn't up yet, but the Observer has posted excerpts:
On how much blame Bill Clinton deserves for the terrorist attacks of 9/11:
A lot. Jimmy Carter got the whole thing started, Bill Clinton let it build, build, build, build, build. He wouldn't deal with it, because he had no credibility on deploying the military. He was a pot smoking draft dodger....
"Pot-smoking draft dodger"? Didn't Mary Matalin say that about 15 years ago?
On women:
If we took away women's right to vote, we'd never have to worry about another Democrat president. It's kind of a pipe dream, it's a personal fantasy of mine, but I don't think it's going to happen....
"I think [women] should be armed but should not [be allowed to] vote" is a Coulter quote from February 2001.
On why global warming is religion on the left...
Oh, please -- is that one of the riffs in her new book? For years, right-wingers have been sneeringly saying that concern about global warming is a religion. They say it as often as humanly possible, and have done so ever since Michael Crichton gave a speech called "Environmentalism as Religion" -- in 2003.
Maybe Ann should just buy a theater in Branson, Missouri, where wingnuts can plan their vacations around seeing her try to pump life into these moldy oldies.
****
UPDATE: The full interview is up now, and it also contains this:
Why do some people believe the terrorist threat has been exaggerated?
"There's an element in this country that is rooting against America. …"
"Rooting against America"? Hey, Ann, you were using that line in 2003.
Oh, and she's asked about what seems to be her fresh new hit, "I want a fatwa":
Did she mean it recently when she said she wished there was a fatwa against her?
"Actually, I can't get one. You can only get one if you're a Muslim. And a Muslim friend of mine also pointed out to me, 'They don't particularly care in your case, because you’re just a girl -- they just want to kill you.'"
But that seems to be a cover version of either this guy or this guy.
