CRUSH THE WITCH

What is this crap?

Taylor Marsh spotted it. She writes:
But in what world of commentary in the 21st century is it okay to show Hillary Clinton’s crushed corpse, in an ode to the Wicked Witch theme in Wizard of Oz?
The non-mobile version is here.

The artist is a woman -- Rebekka Dunlap -- but maybe there's no reason to be surprised at that. Over the years we've just gotten used to seeing Clinton portrayed as a horrible female monster, so Dunlap probably assumes it's no big deal.

I'm reminded of Erica Barnett's 2008 Hillary-hate link collection:
... The misogyny from the media, from supposedly liberal blogger doodz , commenters on this blog, and just about everywhere during this campaign has been despicable. This kind of shit ought to be behind us: Hillary Clinton is a bitch. A big ol’ bitchy bitch. And a cunt. A “big fucking whore.” Fortunately, you can “call a woman anything.” She’s “Nurse Ratched.” She’ll castrate you if she gets a chance. She would like that....
Barnett's post went on and on, through dozens more links. Maybe it was heavy-handed. But she was right about the level of sexist contmpt that was simply seen as acceptable by an awful lot of people if it was in reference to Hillary.

One of the links above is to a post of mine -- remember the Hillary Nutcracker?

I expressed outrage at that, then wound up backing Obama in the primaries. I had a lot of problems with the '08 Clinton campaign. I still wonder whether we'd have wound up with John McCain as secretary of defense in a Hillary administration, just for starters.

And yet the misogyny was outrageous. And, clearly, it still is.

  1. Our Reich-Wingers find this stuff hysterical!

They have the sense of humor of a grade school bully.

They're really not funny - except to one another - because it's well known that conservatives suffer from a severe "Irony Deficiency!"

  2. If it were just Right Wingers, it wouldn't hurt so much.
Secretary Clinton knows what she's in for every single day if she runs for the presidency.
If she's game, so am I.
Why of all the contenders is only Mrs. Clinton called by her first name?

Valid point, though it's partly because she's not the only Clinton who's been politically prominent. Jeb Bush gets called Jeb a lot for the same reason.

  5. Any politician who is not a handsome white middle-aged hetero male will get mocked: John McCain for his age, Barack Obama for his race, John Kerry for his face, Michele Bachmann for her eyes, Lindsey Graham for his alleged homosexuality (the last two by Charles Pierce, no less). It seems to be an unavoidable consequence of the in-your-face rudeness which has become such a defining American characteristic (no doubt the result of all that exceptionalism).

  6. Oh get over it. Don't you have anything real to write about this morning?
