Shorter Lanny Davis on the Wall Street Journal editorial page:

I know you think "McCarthyism" refers to the misuse of institutional power against ordinary people, but it actually means the exact opposite. In fact, if there had been blogs with comments sections in the 1950s and people who'd been blacklisted had gone to them and called Joe McCarthy "a dirty mick," that would have been McCarthyism.
