ABC News chief anchor George Stephanopoulos has given $50,000 to the Clinton Foundation in recent years, charitable contributions that he did not publicly disclose while reporting on the Clintons or their nonprofit organization, the On Media blog has learned. That would never happen in the case of a Republican ex-president, much less in the case of a Republican ex-president with family members who might also run for president someday -- right?
In both 2013 and 2014, Stephanopoulos made a $25,000 donation to the 501 nonprofit founded by former President Bill Clinton, the foundation's records show. Stephanopoulos never disclosed this information to viewers....
Oh, sorry, we may never know for sure. (Emphasis added below.)
[The Clinton Foundation is] certainly more transparent than the foundations that George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush established to fund their presidential libraries and other activities. The George W. Bush Foundation raised $361.8 million between 2010 and 2013, according to its latest tax filing. But it does not have a policy of full disclosure for its donors. According to Hannah Abney, the communications director for the George W. Bush Presidential Center, the names of the foundation's major donors are etched into three "donor walls" in the Dallas-based Bush Center at Southern Methodist University, and the "Freedom Registry," located at the entrance to the George W. Bush museum and library, lists donors who have contributed more than $20. No specific donation amounts are noted, and there's a catch: Any donor who wishes to remain anonymous is not named. Moreover, the only way to see the list of nonanonymous donors is to visit the actual museum and look at the walls and the registry. The George W. Bush Foundation does not make its list available in any other form or in any other place. However, we do know this (again, emphasis added):
Bush Center officials declined to discuss individual donors and focused instead on how the center’s George W. Bush Institute has been a particular draw for philanthropists, corporations and others. The think tank centers on issues like education reform, global health and military service. So Rupert Murdoch gave to a Bush charity and everyone yawned. Why am I not surprised?
Among those giving specifically to the institute, which launched in late 2009: The News Corp. Foundation, AT&T, the Sid W. Richardson Foundation and the Bass Foundation.

UPDATE: Know who gave more than $1 million (and possibly as much as $5 million) to the Clinton Foundation?
Newsmax Media, Inc.
HOW CAN NEWSMAX OBJECTIVELY COVER THE 2016 ELECTION?????
IOKIYAR!
ReplyDeleteEvery damn time!!!
Did News Corp give the money to Bush or Clinton??
ReplyDeleteSorry -- fixed.
ReplyDeletePlease please please let this be known as Stephanopoulos-gate. Because I just want to hear people say it on TV.
ReplyDeleteOr Stephanopoulousghazi -- it's one syllable longer!
ReplyDeleteThe damage to Stephanolpoulous will grow in direct proportion to the amount of shame he displays for this. ABC never fired George Will for coaching Reagan before his Carter debate, and Will never apologized because "F*** you, that's why." But Steph is a man of high morals, and has earned a lofty moniker from Esquire's Charles Pierce for his equally lofty disposition.

ReplyDeleteAbsolutely right.
