Golfer Phil Mickelson is under investigation for possible involvement in insider trading, according to reports in The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. I'm wondering how long it's going to be before folks on the right start telling us that we're hearing the heavy tread of the Obama jackboot --in early 2013, you may recall, Mickelson whined about the tax bill on his earnings of $60 million -- a cry of freedom that was praised by Peggy Noonan ("it was unusual: Most people in his position are clever enough not to sound aggrieved") and was deemed the start of an anti-Obama tax revolt in a FoxNews.com op-ed by Obana conspiracy theorist Wayne Allyn Root. Last year, as Breitbart noted, Mickelson went on CNBC and told Maria Bartiromo that CEOs he golfed with were telling him they weren't hiring because of Obamacare.
Mickelson has had some difficulties with money. Many reports over the years have said that Mickelson has had gambling problems -- here's a good roundup -- and, well, the current story tells us that the insider trading allegedly involves a well-known Vegas gambler:
Federal investigators are pursuing a major insider-trading probe involving finance, gambling and sports, examining the trading of investor Carl Icahn, golfer Phil Mickelson and Las Vegas bettor William "Billy" Walters....So will the right-o-sphere ignore that aspect of Mickelson's life and politicize this? We'll see.
Investigators are examining whether over the past three years Mr. Icahn tipped Mr. Walters -- famous in Las Vegas for his sports-betting acumen -- about potentially market-moving investments by Mr. Icahn's company.
The FBI and SEC are examining whether Mr. Walters on at least one occasion passed a tip on to Mr. Mickelson, these people said, and are studying the two men's trading patterns....
Being a leftie golfer * - among other "leftie" things - I always rooted for Phil.
ReplyDeleteAlso, too - Tiger.
Now, it turns out that one's a conservative sociopathic greed-head (but, I repeat myself), and the other one's a philandering snake and greed-head.
GO, PHILANDERING SNAKE!
*And btw - I am one of the very worst golfer of ALL TIME!
I grew-up in NYC, and the only thing we knew about golf, was that the ball could bounce almost as high as a Super-ball!
Sure, in my early 30's, when I first tried to play - and I could still walk, and played a couple of times a year - I could hit my drive over 300 yards!
The only question was, in which direction?
I hit some hooks and slices that should have been physically impossible, since they ended up to the left or right, BEHIND a 90-degree imaginary line!
HOW'D I DO THAT?!?!?!?!?!
One time, 3 buddies and I went golfing on a local course, and we started-off behind these 4 ancient people - 2 or 3 of whom had badly bent spines.
The 2 women hit their drives, maybe, 80 yards, and the 2 men, maybe 100.
We strong young bucks thought, "Oh, shit! We're going to be here ALL day, playing behind them."
Well, they made the green in 2 or 3 shots, and putted.
Then, it was our turn!
I got up, and HAMMERED a drive - into the woods on the left.
The next guy HAMMERED his drive - into the woods on the right.
Ditto, the other two guys.
A few holes later, the 4-some that had 2-3 people with badly bent spines were at least 3 holes ahead of us!
While we were busy showing-off to one another how far we could whack it, that 4-some hit their shots straight, and then knew how to putt.
We putz's couldn't hit it straight - or putt!
"G-O-L-F" is NOT a 4-letter word fer nothin'!
I'm glad I can't play anymore. Plus, the damn sport IS EXPENSIVE!!!
I am sick and tired of YOU PEOPLE coming after innocent golfers and trying to put 'em in the pokey just because they had a little conversation with their putts.
ReplyDeleteIt just so happens, Mr. Pointy Headed Liberal, that Mickelson, Icahn and Walter are genuine job creators, and the jobs they was creating was greenskeeper plus work for probly three – THREE! – caddies.
You are forgetting the first rule of Freedom, which is, treat your billionaires good and they'll treat you good. I'll betcha each one of them caddies got a $20 tip. Yeah, so put THAT in your pipe and redistribute it.
Very crankily yours,
The New York Crank

ReplyDeleteNot totally true- every once in awhile I see some fellow on the subway with a golf bag. Assume he's heading up to Van Cortland park.
Mickelson is #3 on the ESPN readers' list of the all-time worst choke artists. And now you say he's engaged in shady dealings with a Las Vegas bettor? Hmmm...
ReplyDeleteOf course they'll ignore anything they have to. They've painted themselves into a corner now; they literally don't think anything that makes money for respectable white people should be against the law.
