Guys, Obama is doing the right thing here, but the outcome is uncertain. The opposition is desperate. Desperation begets chaos. Anything might happen.
Cheer your guts out for right thinking, but know that far too many Americans vote irrationally. As rationalists ourselves that's hard to understand, but as realists we need to acknowledge facts.
Boehner is one of the most powerful, effective House Speakers in history. His agenda is sickening, but he is unquestionably good at his job. He's nobody's fool, no matter how foolish he may appear.
Do you realistically think Boehner has been pushed into destroying himself? He can't win because "Truth" and "Justice" always prevail?
I'm a cowboy movie fan. The White Hats always prevail. But those are fables. In the real world, the Black Hats win far too often.
Ruthlessness works quickly, justice takes time. In staging our current national crisis, the bad guys haven't left the good guys much time to make things right.
Obama has had an entire year to prepare for this government shutdown, so there's hope. But there's no White Hat on the horizon. We poor little villagers have to deal with this ourselves.
Shouting "Amen" among the righteous accomplishes nothing. Go forth and convert a dittohead today.

Well, not unquestionably, because I (and a lot of other people) question it. He has some massive failures on his not-terribly-long record as Speaker (e.g., his inability to pass the Plan B bill during the "fiscal cliff" pseudo-drama), all of which point to a lack of control over his caucus. You want to make a #SlatePitch argument that he's actually really effective, I'll listen, but right now I just don't see it.
That's not to say I think everything's going to be all right (nor did I say as much). All of the alternatives are pretty bad, and there's a strong possibility of unimaginable catastrophe here. But refusing to negotiate with the hostage-takers is an absolutely necessary position to take right now.
@White Hat: huh? This is crazy talk - my guess is you're trolling. But if you not, and you are sincerely making this claim, then I'm with Tom Hilton - let's hear the argument. The 113th Congress is one of the do-nothingest and worst in U.S. history, but its speaker is somehow one of "most powerful, effective House Speakers in history"?
It could all be a bunch of kabuki, like so many who like to consider themselves as "independent" are fond of saying. Me, I just go by what it appears on the surface.
What it appears to me, on the surface, is that the Boner is the dog being wagged by the tail. It should be pretty obvious who the tail is at this point.
Just say nope, to dopes!
ReplyDeleteIndeed!

ReplyDeleteYou've got your work cut out for you.
That's not to say that I don't agree with some of your other points: it's an old adage that the bad sleep well.

ReplyDeleteAre you kidding? He's just as much a hostage of the crazies as the government is. He's completely ineffective.
