IT'S GOOD TO TOUCH THE GREEN, GREEN GRASS OF HOME
So I watched the State of the Union, and damn, I don't know how the guy does it year in and year out -- rattles off lists of potentially beneficial, decent programs (expanded refinancing aid! universal early childhood education! putting people to work fixing 70,000 bridges!) knowing there isn't a snowball's chance in hell than any will ever be considered seriously by Congress. I don't know how he manages to maintain his enthusiasm and sense of mission. It's what it must be like listening to the life-without-parole guy in prison describe in painstaking detail the elaborate beach house he's going to build when he gets out, even though he never will get out. You don't know whether it's self-delusion or a sign of the indomitable nature of the human spirit. And then at the end was the strongest part of the speech -- on guns, an issue on which he's likely to be utterly stonewalled. (No, I don't agree with the conventional wisdom that he'll lose on the assault weapons ban but get a background check bill passed.) So he did fine, but does it matter? He still has to share the job of governing with people who don't believe in governing or sharing.
A dubious distinction, that, presiding ore the final administration of what were once the "united" states of "America". With Grace, and Dignity. A dubious distinction, nevertheless.
ReplyDeleteAt harbinger I offer: in TheRacist Party's (aka The Egg-Sucking Dog Party) knee-jerk, or dick-jerk, obstructionism of anything the Half-Black Man on the White House might do may have left we "greenies" something to chuckle ore our micro-brewed ale. Consider, Susan Rice, she of the heavily invested in Canadian Tar Sands, would have been far the more likely to approve, or recomend approval, of the Keystone XL pipeline than John Kerry... and tonight Daddy Warbucks is crying in the cheap-ass piss he calls beer.
No fear...

I didn’t watch the SOTU, or the response from Rubio – or Paul.
ReplyDeleteIt’s probably the first one I’ve missed since one of Bush I’s.
I was too pooped to tune in to the President talk a little bit of sense, and watch the socopathic troglodytes sit on their hands, and then have one or two of them gibber some nonsense in response.
My guess is that when he rattled of that list, it was to keep the R's feet to the fire, and to keep pressure on them, hoping some will crack.
Frankly, the State of the Union, is divided, and sh*tty.
Better than 4 years ago, but still fairly sh*tty for too many of us.
I’d have known about it if he had, but I’d have loved to see him mention “Area 21″ in the SOTU – just for sh*ts and giggles, and to watch the righties heads explode.
It was fun watching the torture of John Boehner. I wish the quote of the day was "manufactured crises", but "they deserve a vote" got an ovation of disgust from Republicans, and that might resonate.
