THE GODS CAN'T POSSIBLE LIKE ME ENOUGH TO ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN
There is so much awesomeness in the new Public Policy Polling survey of Iowa that I don't know where to begin. First of all: you know that Mitt Romney is behind Newt Gingrich in just about every recent Iowa poll, and behind Ron Paul in some polls. But, um, could he possibly finish fourth in Iowa? Well...
Newt Gingrich has taken the lead in PPP's newest poll of Iowa Republican caucus voters with 27% to 18% for Ron Paul, 16% for Mitt Romney, 13% for Michele Bachmann, 9% for Rick Perry, 6% for Rick Santorum, 4% for Jon Huntsman, and 1% for Gary Johnson.
Gingrich has gained 19 points since PPP's last poll of the race in early October. Also showing momentum are Paul whose support is up 8% and Bachmann whose support is up 5%. Romney has dropped 6 points since then with the other candidates mostly standing in place....
Yowzah! She's getting hot, or at least warm, just at the right time! She's got -- as it were -- the Big Mo!
I'm loving this. (Emphasis added above.)
I don't want a party that's gone this crazy to be able to conceal its true nature by nominating Mitt Romney. I want the in-denial political-insider world to be compelled to come to terms with what the GOP has become. A Gingrich/Paul/Bachmann win/place/show in Iowa, with Romney completely out of the running, would be ideal.
PPP keeps putting up tweets that highlight particular results from this poll -- and much of the news for Romney isn't good. There's this:
Romney's biggest problem in Iowa- more than half of his 2008 supporters in the state now for someone else
Ouch. And this:
Voters most concerned about ... electability: Gingrich up 39-11
And my favorite -- this:
Top issue for Iowa Republicans is gov't spending and the deficit. Romney is only 4th with those voters
Mr. Businessman Cheapskate Billionaire isn't even winning as the best fiscal steward! Awesome.
This can't last -- I can't possibly be getting this for Christmas. I just know Gingrich will implode, Bachmann will drop back again, the Paulbots won't show up at the caucuses, and Romney will take it just the way all the Beltway insiders say he will. My dreams can't possibly come true -- can they?
****
UPDATE: Talking Points Memo says Bachmann is now claiming to have won the support of nineteen prominent backers of Herman Cain in Iowa (if "prominent backers of Herman Cain" isn't a contradiction in terms).
No, the God's can't possibly love us that much.
ReplyDeleteAnd no matter which absurd loon the Republican candidate may be, too many members of the MSM, afraid of being accused of having a liberal bias, will look at the naked Emperor wannabe's exposed withered schlong or sagging tata's, and compliment them on their taste in attire.
See Bush, George W.
Also too: Cheney, Dick
I decided to go out on a limb last week and predicted Newt gets the nomination. I figure there just isn't time enough for him to implode, that the Crazies in the Republican Party know he is one of them, and that the Orderlies can pretend he is one of them because he's spent the past decade and a half being treated like a "wise elder stateman" by the Media Villagers.
ReplyDeleteIf the Orderlies really have lost control of the asylum, they'll all start pretending that Newt is really one of their own in an effort to persuade the rest of us that they are still wearing clothes.
Indeed that may already be happening. Jon Meacham has an article up over at Time asking (apparently in all seriousness) whether Newt is the next FDR. David Fahrenhold in The Washington Post has an article the headline of which suggests President Gingrich would turn the White House into a "house of ideas."
Newt is one of the Crazies, but he can play an Orderly on TeeVee.

ReplyDeleteGood grief. Gingrich is basically just a less paranoid, slightly more coherent Jared Loughner.
Meacham's kind of surprising, because last week, as I was making breakfast for my parents, I heard him on Cup O' Schmoe's show saying, and I'm clearly paraphrasing - that knowing Newt's history, and prediliction to shitting in his own bed, that watching him run for President and not expecting him to do something remarkably stupid would be like watching "Hamlet" and expecting a different ending.
ReplyDeleteJesus must have shown Meacham that he was wrong.
I didn't know Cain had 19 prominent backers in Iowa, but thought it possible he had 19 ex-girlfriends there.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, Swellsman. The Orderlies (nice term) can easily convince themselves of Newt's being one of them - after all, he was Speaker & on the cover of Time & knows which one is the salad fork. (Compare & contrast Perry.) Meanwhile, Newt can toss the lumpenright all the craziness they crave & get away with it since the Orderlies will know that's 'just politics'.
ReplyDeleteIMO, if Newt & Mitty cut a deal right now to run as 1-2 in that order, they might put this to bed, but the egos involved won't permit it... yet.
The next FDR? I've had dogs who could've come up with more sensible comparisons. The next Nixon, perhaps, which is bad enough.
But let's all be careful what we wish for. With one mega-infusion of Koch Brothers money plus some other corporate bucks sprayed into a Gingrich, or Bachmann, or Paul presidential campaign, the nominee's noise might simply swamp common sense. You think that's highly improbable? Just remember, we had eight years of George Bush.
ReplyDeleteYours very crankily,
The New York Crank
NYCRank - agreed, no folly lies beyond the US electorate, including elevating any of those you named (or worse if they exist) to the WH. Not only do I not think it improbable, I wouldn't give over 50/50 against it. Had the '08 Lehman crash happened 6 weeks later than it did, we'd be basking in the glow of the McCain (or Palin) Admin even now.
