CHANGE? McCAIN CAN'T EVEN CHANGE HIS CATCHPHRASE

Wow:

McCain, in a speech in Jacksonville, Florida, this morning, said, "You know that there's been tremendous turmoil in our financial markets and Wall St. And it is -- people are frightened by these events. Our economy, I think still -- the fundamentals of our economy are strong. But these are very, very difficult times."

(Emphasis added.)

I think that highlighted passage (you can watch the clip at either of the links above) needs to be edited into a new nationwide version of this excellent Michigan-only Obama ad from a couple of weeks ago, along with some of today's financial headlines:

Change? McCain won't change his own catchphrase, even today -- and he didn't change it after he borrowed it from Bush.

I'm sure the Obama team will use it in some way. It just might turn out that McCain lost the election today.

****

UPDATE: Atrios says,

McCain has now defined the fundamentals of the economy as "workers and small businesses," so if you suggest something is wrong with the economy you're insulting workers.

Um, that's not going to work. How many workers and small business owners do you think are going to tell you this is a fundamentally strong economy as far as they're concerned? They're not going to be insulted if you say the economy is tough for them -- in fact, they're going to tell you it's tough for them.

Keep digging, John. And, Obama campaign, I hope you're taking very careful notes.
