MAKE LEMONADE

Let me predict that the next sound you hear will be Mitt Romney trying to score points with religious conservative voters by boasting that he's being attacked by the "liberal media" for his religion speech.

Never mind the fact that his critics include David Frum, David Brooks, and Peggy Noonan -- I think he's going to try to turn the criticism into a badge of honor, and declare that all of his critics are secular-humanist liberals.

If you need further evidence that he's heading in that direction, check out this new Romney TV ad, in which the narrator uses the phrase "When it wasn't politically correct" three times in the first twelve seconds while describing stands Mitt has taken.

Being a Mormon may make it impossible for him to persuade social conservatives that he should lead their permanent culture war, but he's going to try his damnedest to make that case anyway.
