HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL

Last night, in reference to Ann Coulter's statement that Jews need to be "perfected" by converting to Christianity, I saw this blog post:

I CAN ONLY HOPE THAT THIS IS...

a tipping point for Coulter....

A tipping point. Where have I heard that before?

David Brauder, AP, 3/11/07:

Has Ann Coulter Hit Her Tipping Point?

...Following her use of a gay slur about Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards this month during remarks to the Conservative Political Action Conference, some on TV are wondering whether her shelf life is expiring....

Chris Durang, Huffington Post, 7/7/06:

Might Ann Coulter have reached a tipping point? Her comments on the Today Show, her insanely nasty comments about the 9-11 widows, really seemed "beyond"...

Scoobie Davis, 7/6/06:

...it's been thoroughly established that Coulter engaged in plagiarism, not only in the book Godless but for her syndicated column ...

I sense that with the other examples of intellectually dishonest aspects of Coulter's career, this could be a tipping point....

Mark Green, Huffington Post, 8/27/05:

...By now Ann Coulter should have reached a tipping point where serious journalists would stop treating her antics and comments seriously. Suggesting that Timothy McVeigh should have blown up the New York Times building instead of the one in Oklahoma City should probably have been enough to ward Time magazine off its unctuous cover profile....

With Coulter, one incident after another has appeared to be a tipping point. But no tipping point ever comes. She may fade if she stops selling books and pulling high ratings on the TV shows that book her, but that'll only happen if people get bored with her. She'll never be banished for going over the line -- both right-wingers and the mainstream media have decided that, by definition, she never goes over the line. She's been too popular. That confers lifetime immunity.
