A Maryland Public Service Commission member acknowledged yesterday that he used his state computer to engage in sexual conversations with an alleged prostitute but said he never committed a criminal act.

Hmmm. Here's Charles Boutin about to call for a state constitutional ban on gay marriage alongside a lawyer for the Alliance Defense Fund, a group whose president, Alan Sears, was director of Attorney General Meese's pornography commission during the Reagan years. Here's Boutin at a legislative hearing on his bill and another anti-gay-marriage bill. Oh, and here's Boutin's endorsement in 2002 from Maryland Right to Life. (He's in District 34A.)

Is it a cheap shot to point these things out? Yeah, maybe.

Then again, here's the full text of the second paragraph above:

Charles R. Boutin issued a statement last night expressing his shame and sorrow for his conduct, but he said in a strikingly candid news release that his actions were part of an effort to deal with his impotency after surgery for bladder cancer.

Dude? Please -- don't try to explain. It's embarrassing. Just acknowledge that you got caught doing this and move on.
