The U.S. Army will need to spend more than $10 billion this year to repair or replace vehicles that are wearing out at four times the expected pace due to heavy combat use in Iraq, Congressman Martin Meehan said.

The added costs of maintaining the vehicle fleet in Iraq aren't included in the defense budget, Meehan, a Democrat from Lowell, Massachusetts, said in an interview before departing for Iraq and Afghanistan on Friday....

Army spokeswoman Major Desiree Wineland said she couldn't comment on the issue of equipment stress in Iraq or "anything that impacts our operational performance in theater."

"We do not want to compromise our soldiers," Wineland said.
