The wingers think this NewsBusters item exposes a horrible level of hypocrisy:
First Lady Requires Photo ID for Her Book Signings; Voter ID Law-hating Media Fail to Note Obama Hypocrisy
The Obama administration has done its best to oppose states from instituting new, stricter voter ID laws, complaining that many minority voters lack photo identification. But those same folks it wants voting in November are apparently not welcome anywhere near the First Lady's book signings. Something tells me that the same media outlets comparing voter ID laws to the Jim Crow Laws, however, won't see any hint of hypocrisy here, if they even report the story at all.
As stated on the blog Obama Foodorama:
On Friday, June 8th, those wishing to attend the event must purchase a copy of the First Lady's book at the location and leave it at the store, according to the employee. At the same time, customers must also submit their social security number and show an official photo ID (driver's license, passport) to a Secret Service agent, and they will be issued a wristband to the First Lady's event on June 12.( Emphasis added)...
So wait -- seeing the First Lady in person at a store and getting an autographed copy of her book is now a fundamental right critical to the functioning of democracy? Because that's what it would have to be if it were analogous to voting. Voting is a fundamental right. Meeting the First Lady isn't.
And the Obama administration is now somehow responsible for security precautions required by the Secret Service? And that are probably the same precautions the Secret Service has used for years in similar circumstances? (Admittedly, when I go to this story about Laura Bush's visit to a children's bookstore in 2008 after she'd written a book for kids, I see no reference to photo IDs -- but I do see "Bomb-sniffing dogs, airport-style metal detectors, blinders in the shop's big glass windows to foil assassination attempts.")
Sorry, right-wingers, this is one of your more ridiculous attacks.
