HOW SOON WILL THIS CAUSE SYNAPSE OVERLOAD IN GLENN BECK'S BRAIN?

I confess I haven't been following the global warming wars, though I've been vaguely aware of Lord Monckton, a former adviser to Margaret Thatcher who's a skeptic on the idea of human-generated climate change and who's run ads in major U.S. newspapers challenging Al Gore to a debate on the subject.

Well, now I see he's stirred up the wingnuttosphere with this:

Obama Poised to Cede US Sovereignty, Claims British Lord

The Minnesota Free Market Institute hosted an event at Bethel University in St. Paul on Wednesday evening. Keynote speaker Lord Christopher Monckton, former science adviser to British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, gave a scathing and lengthy presentation....

Here were Monckton's closing remarks, as dictated from my audio recording:

At [the 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference in] Copenhagen, this December, weeks away, a treaty will be signed. Your president will sign it....

I read that treaty. And what it says is this, that a world government is going to be created. The word "government" actually appears as the first of three purposes of the new entity....

So, at last, the communists who piled out of the Berlin Wall and into the environmental movement, who took over Greenpeace so that my friends who funded it left within a year, because [the communists] captured it -- Now the apotheosis as at hand. They are about to impose a communist world government on the world.

... in the next few weeks, unless you stop it, your president will sign your freedom, your democracy, and your prosparity away forever. And neither you nor any subsequent government you may elect will have any power whatsoever to take it back....

Edited for long-windedness. Here's the clip:

The idiocy of this is that the same wingnuts who see the UN as a force for "one-world government" also bitch about the UN's support for national self-determination of people they don't like, e.g., the Palestinians. Right, that makes sense: those evildoers on the East River believe denying Palestinians national sovereignty is a crime ... but that national sovereignty should be within the context of one-world socialist government. Perfectly logical, right?

On a skeptic Web site I found a PDF of what's said to be the treaty, and here, I think, is the relevant passage:

38. The scheme for the new institutional arrangement under the Convention will be based on three basic pillars: government; facilitative mechanism; and financial mechanism, and the basic organization of which will include the following:

(a) The government will be ruled by the COP with the support of a new subsidiary body on adaptation, and of an Executive Board responsible for the management of the new funds and the related facilitative processes and bodies. The current Convention secretariat will operate as such, as appropriate.

Hey, I don't speak fluent Treaty, but I see no reason to believe that "government" there means "one-world government that destroys national sovereignty in every country on the planet." It looks to me like a reference to the governing body responsible for treaty enforcement. Um, obviously.

And equally obviously, how the bloody hell do these people think the UN, which can't even stop genocides in country where the worst weapons are machetes, is going to overthrow every government on earth? In Iran? In Pakistan? In Texas? Really? Everybody's government? One big commie global utopia?

But World Net Daily is already up in arms. There's already an Atlas Shrugs ACTION ALERT.

And, um, Glenn Beck has interviewed Monckton in the past.

So now climate change is probably going to be worked into the idiot Beck theory of Obama as a big fat commie Chavezist Maoist ACORNist -- now with "expert testimony" "proving" that the secret goal of Kyoto and Copenhaghen is one-world government. And we'll probably see signs at tea parties reading "Climate Change Treaty = One World Government."

And it can only get more idiotic from there.

Oh, and maybe Beck can work in all of his pet theories. Here's something else Monckton says:

The second purpose [of the treaty] is the transfer of wealth from the countries of the West to third world countries, in satisfication of what is called, coyly, "climate debt" -- because we've been burning CO2 and they haven't. We've been screwing up the climate and they haven't.

You know what Beck might call this? "Reparations." Of course! The UN is a global ACORN! (Hell, he's already called health-care reform "reparations.")

UPDATE, MONDAY: Monckton was on Beck's radio show today. I haven't listened to the clip, but gosh, that didn't take long.
