THE UNCROSSABLE THRESHOLD OBAMA HAS ACTUALLY CROSSED SEVERAL TIMES
Yet, in poll after poll, Obama conspicuously fails to cross the 50-percent threshold.
Yes, he just can't seem to cross that threshold -- except in the polls where he actually has. Such as these, just from the summer:
* CNN/Opinion Research Corporation Poll, July 27-29, 2008: McCain 44, Obama 51
* Research 2000 for news media clients. July 25-27, 2008: McCain 39, Obama 51
* CBS News/New York Times Poll. July 7-14, 2008: McCain 40, Obama 51
* Newsweek Poll, June 18-19, 2008: McCain 36, Obama 51
By the way, there was a presidential candidate who went all summer without ever going above 50% in polls from Newsweek, Pew, Fox, Time, AP, the L.A. Times, NBC/Wall Street Journal, Marist, ARG, and ABC. Hell, he never even got above 45% in summer polls from CBS, Zogby, Quinnipiac, NPR, Democracy Corps, ICR, and TIPP. He got above 50% in one (1) summer CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll.
That big fat unelectable loser was George W. Bush in 2004. (Keep scrolling through the "Earlier polling" pages for the numbers.)
And yes, he was a polarizing figure running an increasingly unpopular war, but if he'd had a "(D)" next to his name, the press would have said, "He's a wartime president, and the public always rallies around wartime presidents. Plus, the economy's in pretty good shape. Why isn't he doing better?"
