The literary blog Splinters points out that Leon Wieseltier, who trashed Nicholson Baker's anti-Iraq War novella Checkpoint for The New York Times Book Review, was one of the signers of a letter to President Bush from Project for the New American Century (yeah, those guys), dated September 20, 2001, that, among other things, called for the overthrow of the Iraqi government.

But even if evidence does not link Iraq directly to the attack, any strategy aiming at the eradication of terrorism and its sponsors must include a determined effort to remove Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq. Failure to undertake such an effort will constitute an early and perhaps decisive surrender in the war on international terrorism.

Other signatories include Richard Perle, William Bennett, Norman Podhoretz, Midge Decter, and Charles Krauthammer.
