General Powell has impressed a lot of people, I gather (I still haven't seen any of the presentation), but a lot of military men who have attained high rank still think an Iraq war is a lousy idea. There's a great deal about what they've said and what they believe in Eric Alterman's MSNBC blog.

In the February 5 entry, scroll past the link for Alterman's book What Liberal Media? and read about the doubts expressed by Generals Anthony Zinni, Wesley Clark, and Norman Schwarzkopf (yes, I know Stormin' Norman was impressed with the State of the Union address), as well as Admiral Eugene Carroll.

The February 3 entry quotes at length from a recent speech by General Zinni. The speech is eloquent; it reminds you that (today excepted) we're hearing a lot of talk from people who've never seen war and glamorize it and not enough from people who have seen war and don't. Well worth your time.
